Ajith Alagiyawanna

Dr. Ajith Alagiyawanna is enrolled in the Ph.D. programme at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

He is a Consultant in Public Health from the Ministry of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Sri Lanka. He is the pioneer and the national programme manager of the Happy Village Project, which is the most robust population-level health promotion intervention for Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention in Sri Lanka. Dr. Ajith holds an MBBS from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and MD from the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Sri Lanka. He was a Public Health Research Fellow, National Health Services, UK and Public Health Department, Oxford University, UK

As a Consultant in Public Health with a 20-year unblemished career in Sri Lanka and the United-Kingdom, Dr.Ajith is committed to serving diverse communities nationally and internationally and has gained valuable experience by working during civil wars and natural disasters. Some of Dr. Ajith’s research interests are health promotion and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and risk factors (physical activity, nutrition, smoking, and alcohol), intervention models to reduce the burden of diabetes and chronic NCDs in Lower Middle-income countries. As part of the GHRU, Ajith is leading the happy village plus a project in Sri Lanka.
