GHRU research presented at the 58th Annual Academic Sessions of the Ceylon College of Physicians (CCP 2025)

Thilina Samarathunga presented his abstract findings on “Prevalence and Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease in Sri Lanka: Findings from the South Asia Biobank” at the CCP 2025 Conference held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The study analysed nationally representative data from the Sri Lankan cohort of the South Asia Biobank. Results showed a 3.8% prevalence of self-reported cardiovascular disease, with higher rates in urban areas and in the Western Province, and the lowest in Uva Province. Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity were strong determinants of cardiovascular disease, and their impact varied across different provinces of Sri Lanka.

These findings add to the limited data by providing nationally representative results on CVD in Sri Lanka and underscore the need for multi-sectoral collaborative efforts to address lifestyle and metabolic risk factors in order to reduce the country’s growing burden of cardiovascular disease.
